Mike Tyson's recent issue with an ulcer forced postponement of his planned bout with Jake Paul that was scheduled for July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Tyson had an issue on May 26 with his ulcer while on a plane. On Friday, promoters announced that the bout would be postponement so that Tyson can recover and return to training without limitations.
In a news release, Most Valuable Promotions said a new date would be announced by June 7. The fight will remain at AT&T Stadium on the new date.
Treatment recommended by Tyson's physician included doing minimal training over the next several weeks. That made it impossible for the 57-year-old former undisputed heavyweight champion to be ready to compete in the bout, that was set to be aired on Netflix.
“I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time," Tyson said in a statement released by MVP. "Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flare-up, I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover. My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training schedule soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s patience and can't wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”
Tyson hasn't fought a real fight since getting stopped by Kevin McBride after six rounds on June 11, 2005, in Washington, D.C. He did compete in an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. on Nov. 28, 2020, in Los Angeles.
Tyson will be 58 on fight night, and this incident shows the risks inherent in allowing fighters of such advanced age to compete.
Paul accepted the postponement with equanimity.

“I fully support postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night,” Paul said. “My fans know I don’t want to face 'Iron Mike' at anything but his best, but let there be no mistake: When he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my 'W' with a sensational finish. Paul vs Tyson will be one for the ages, and I promise to bring my best for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup.”
